Background of the Study
In recent years, climate change has become an undeniable reality, exerting profound effects on agricultural communities worldwide. In Kano State, agriculture forms the backbone of the local economy, and farmers’ ability to adapt to climatic shifts is crucial for sustainable livelihoods. Despite the clear evidence of climate variability, there is a growing concern that many farmers lack comprehensive awareness of climate change and its implications on farming practices. This awareness gap can lead to maladaptive practices that further exacerbate vulnerability and reduce productivity (Bello, 2023).

The rural communities in Kano State depend heavily on rainfall and predictable seasonal patterns. However, recent trends indicate erratic rainfall distribution, prolonged dry spells, and sudden downpours that disrupt planting and harvesting cycles. Such unpredictable weather patterns challenge traditional farming methods and force farmers to adopt new strategies, yet their limited awareness of climate change mechanisms often hampers these transitions (Garba, 2024). Moreover, educational outreach and governmental support programs may not be effectively reaching the grassroots, resulting in a knowledge deficit regarding sustainable and adaptive farming practices. Studies have shown that farmers who are better informed about climate risks tend to adopt innovative techniques and diversify their income sources, thereby enhancing resilience (Yusuf, 2025).

This study seeks to assess the level of climate change awareness among farmers in Kano State. It will critically examine the extent to which farmers understand the causes, impacts, and adaptation strategies related to climate change. The research will delve into the role of local extension services, community-based organizations, and government agencies in disseminating climate information. Furthermore, it will explore how factors such as educational background, access to information technology, and participation in training programs influence farmers’ awareness and adaptive behavior. The findings are expected to provide insight into the gaps in current outreach initiatives and to recommend strategies to improve knowledge transfer, thereby fostering a more climate-resilient agricultural sector.

The importance of this research is underscored by the direct link between climate awareness and effective adaptation. Inadequate understanding of climate change can lead to poor decision-making, reduced agricultural productivity, and increased vulnerability to environmental shocks. Hence, building robust awareness is not only a matter of environmental education but also a critical component of economic stability and food security in Kano State. By integrating recent empirical findings with localized data, this study aims to contribute significantly to policy-making and capacity-building initiatives tailored for the region.

Statement of the Problem
Despite the apparent effects of climate change on agricultural productivity, there is evidence that many farmers in Kano State remain unaware of the underlying causes and long-term implications of these climatic shifts. This lack of awareness impedes the adoption of innovative and adaptive farming techniques that are crucial for mitigating adverse impacts. The problemis compounded by inadequate dissemination of climate information through formal channels and a reliance on traditional knowledge, which may not be sufficient in the face of rapidly changing environmental conditions (Ibrahim, 2023).

Farmers’ limited understanding of climate change not only jeopardizes crop yields but also increases their susceptibility to economic shocks. Erratic weather patterns lead to unpredictable harvests, thereby affecting food security and income stability. Moreover, the absence of targeted educational programs and support systems means that many farmers are ill-prepared to implement adaptive strategies such as drought-resistant crops, efficient water management, and diversified farming practices. The gap between the scientific community’s understanding of climate change and the practical knowledge available to farmers has significant implications for the sustainability of agricultural practices in Kano State (Musa, 2024).

This study seeks to address the urgent need for a comprehensive assessment of climate change awareness among farmers. By evaluating the current levels of understanding, identifying the main sources of information, and analyzing the factors that influence awareness, the research will uncover critical weaknesses in current extension services and policy frameworks. It will also provide insights into how improved awareness can lead to better adaptation strategies, ultimately enhancing agricultural productivity and resilience. Addressing this knowledge gap is vital for formulating interventions that not only educate but also empower farmers to actively participate in climate adaptation initiatives. Failure to bridge this gap may result in continued vulnerability of the agricultural sector and a decline in the socio-economic well-being of rural communities in Kano State.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To evaluate the current level of climate change awareness among farmers in Kano State.
  2. To identify the key factors influencing farmers’ understanding of climate change.
  3. To recommend strategies for enhancing climate change education and adaptive practices in the region.

Research Questions

  1. What is the current level of awareness regarding climate change among farmers in Kano State?
  2. Which socio-economic and educational factors influence climate change awareness in the farming community?
  3. What strategies can be implemented to improve farmers’ understanding and adaptive responses to climate change?

Research Hypotheses

  1. There is a significant relationship between farmers’ educational background and their level of climate change awareness.
  2. Access to modern communication channels significantly enhances climate change awareness among farmers.
  3. Targeted extension services and training programs positively affect the adoption of adaptive farming practices.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study focuses on selected rural communities in Kano State where agriculture is predominant. Data will be collected through structured interviews, surveys, and focus group discussions. Limitations include potential biases in self-reporting, limited generalizability beyond the sampled communities, and constraints related to language and literacy levels among respondents.

Definitions of Terms

  • Climate Change Awareness: The degree of understanding about the causes, effects, and adaptation strategies related to climate variability.
  • Farmers: Individuals engaged in agricultural activities, particularly those reliant on traditional farming practices.
  • Adaptive Practices: Strategies and techniques implemented to mitigate the adverse effects of climate change on agriculture.
